Urgent Care Q & A

What are dental emergencies

and how can I avoid them?

Dental emergencies can occur when your tooth breaks, cracks, becomes loosened, or is knocked out completely. Sometimes dental crowns come off of teeth. Lips, gums, or cheeks can be cut.

Dental emergencies can be avoided by taking simple precautions, such as wearing a mouthguard during sports activities to prevent teeth from breaking or being knocked out, and avoiding hard foods that may crack or break your teeth—whether you have your natural teeth or you wear dentures. Oral injuries often are painful and should be treated by a dentist as soon as possible.

If a tooth is knocked out,

can it be re-implanted?

This is one of the most common questions that come into the Blooming Dental office, and the truth is, no cut-and-dried answer exists. Patients only have a window of 1–2 hours during which a tooth can be successfully re-implanted. To maximize the chances of success, patients can try to gently rinse the lost tooth, then reposition it into the socket in the proper position before contacting the Blooming Dental office. If that is not possible, patients should immediately submerge the tooth in a small amount of milk, water or saliva from their mouth. Rinse the mouth out with warm water. Next, apply pressure to the gum area to stop any bleeding and use a cold compress to reduce swelling until treatment begins.

What are the other risks

associated with dental injuries?

The gum tissue that surrounds teeth forms an essential barrier between the human body and the outside world. When that barrier is compromised by a dental injury, bacteria and other harmful elements can enter the body. Infection can occur, which is a condition that can quickly become difficult to control. Any time that a dental injury occurs, it is important to seek urgent care as soon as possible. Dr. James J. Lee, DDS is highly skilled at emergency dental procedures, and can chart a course of action to restore a healthy and happy smile.

What should be done immediately

after a dental injury?

The most important thing to do is to assess the situation and make sure that everyone is safe. If any questions exist about physical safety or if other types of bodily harm have taken place, call 911 immediately. If there is no risk of further injury, it is important to gather any pieces of tooth that may have broken off or any dental devices that were broken. Then, contact the Blooming Dental office to determine the next steps. Whether at our Cedar Park, Texas location, urgent care is a service that Dr. James J. Lee, DDS, and his staff take very seriously.
